Culturally, we've been lead to believe that distracting ourselves from difficult or negative emotions is the way to make them disappear when, in fact, the opposite is true. When we take tender time to sit with our hearts and feelings with non-judgmental awareness, to feel them in the body, we can cultivate an attitude of compassion, curiosity and softening. The result is that we lean closer to ourselves and tend to observe how feelings we might have been resisting begin to ebb through and away.
